Yamaha Motorcycle Oil Filters

Yamaha is Japan’s second largest motorcycle manufacturer and one of the Japanese Big Four motorcycle brands (with Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki). Yamaha’s first motorcycle debuted in 1955, the YA-1. It was a copy of the German DKW RT 125, but the Yamaha YA-1 proved itself to be winner in both sales and in the motorcycle racing circuit. With Yamaha achieving instant success with the YA-1, the company found themselves inspired and motivated by the spirit of competition (forming an intense rivalry against Japan’s #1 motorcycle brand, Honda). Throughout the 50s and 60s, Yamaha further developed their motorsports efforts and one of the products that was bred from the company’s racing experience was the 1968 XS-1, Yamaha’s first 4-stroke performance motorcycle. Yamaha continued their foray into 4-stroke motorcycles in the 70s and in 1976, Yamaha countered the multi-cylinder sport bikes from Honda and Suzuki with the 3-cylinder XS750. The 1980s and 1990s was a new dawn of high-performance for Yamaha. During this period, Yamaha unveiled the RZ350 (1983), XV750 (1981), RZV500 (1984), FZR1000 (1987), and the SZR660 and YZF1000R Thunderface (both in 1996). Today, Yamaha’s motorcycle program operates and maintains more than 20 international subsidiaries across the world and their reach continues to grow year by year.

One of the most popular aftermarket brands in motorsports is K&N Engineering. Founded in 1964 by Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald, K&N began out of necessity for high-flow, durable air filters that could withstand the dirt, debris, and abuse of motorcycle racing. The first K&N air filter was produced in 1969. It featured medical-quality cotton gauze that was lightly coated in oil to allow higher airflow while providing optimal engine protection from harmful airborne particulates and debris. This became the standard K&N air filter that performance enthusiasts are familiar with today. K&N’s success in the motorcycle aftermarket eventually led them to create oil filters of their own design; both spin-on and cartridge type K&N oil filters were engineered with the same level of performance as their famous reusable air filters.
