Honda Motorcycle Oil Filters

After World War II, engineer and business magnate Soichiro Honda began building motorcycles in 1946. At the time, the Japanese were looking to motorcycles for inexpensive and reliable means of transportation. Honda’s first motorcycles were crudely-assembled bicycles that incorporated leftover 50cc radio generator engines. In 1949, Honda built their first-ever complete motorcycle called the D-Type, or Dream. The Dream was an instant success for Honda and soon, the company became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in all of Japan. Spearheaded by Honda, Japanese motorcycles began to overtake and eventually supplant the traditional Western makes such as England’s Triumph and BSA and America’s Harley-Davidson and Indian. As with their automotive division, Honda has always pushed the boundaries of high-performance and in 1961, the Honda C100 Super Cub placed first at the Isle of Man. Using what they’ve learned on the racetrack, Honda developed such blistering performance sport bikes including the 1965 CB450, the revolutionary 1969 CB750 that became the gold standard of all sport bikes that followed, and the modern CBR1000XX Super Blackbird, VFR, and the top-tier RC213V-S Supersport racing street bike. As Japan’s #1 leading motorcycle brand, Honda is a dominant force on the streets and professional racing circuits all across the globe.

One of the most popular aftermarket brands in motorsports is K&N Engineering. Founded in 1964 by Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald, K&N began out of necessity for high-flow, durable air filters that could withstand the dirt, debris, and abuse of motorcycle racing. The first K&N air filter was produced in 1969. It featured medical-quality cotton gauze that was lightly coated in oil to allow higher airflow while providing optimal engine protection from harmful airborne particulates and debris. This became the standard K&N air filter that performance enthusiasts are familiar with today. K&N’s success in the motorcycle aftermarket eventually led them to create oil filters of their own design; both spin-on and cartridge type K&N oil filters were engineered with the same level of performance as their famous reusable air filters.
