Carburetors are a component of an internal combustion engine’s fuel delivery system that mixes the proper blend of fuel and oxygen that’s necessary for ignition. While carburetors have since gone the way of the dinosaur in today’s modern cars and trucks, many small engines still employ them. Some engines used in motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and other small powersports vehicles have use for carburetors in lieu of electronic fuel injection. The reason for this is because powersports vehicles are not under the same scrutiny for smog and emissions standards as cars and trucks are; there are far less of them in use to heavily contribute to air pollution. Plus, the rather simplistic, tried and true carburetor design is a packaging alternative to the more complex fuel injection system which requires the use of additional computers, electronics, wiring, and sensors. Carburetors are relatively easy to maintain, but they still do have their share of faults and failures.
