Motorcycle Batteries
Traditional motor vehicle lead batteries were a messy affair. Periodically, the batteries had to be inspected to ensure that their electrolyte and water levels were adequate. If not, water had to be added and this potentially dangerous bit of servicing would sometimes result in accidental acid and chemical spills with the potential for bodily injury. These batteries were sensitive to charge, were vulnerable to vibration damage, and required a fair amount of care and maintenance. Lead acid batteries evolved into gel batteries and AGM batteries. The most popular type today is AGM (absorbed glass mat). AGM batteries came into prominence during the 1980s. It is a type of VRLA battery, or valve-regulated lead-acid battery, better known as a maintenance free battery. Their purpose was initially for military aircraft to improve reliability and durability. An AGM battery is a fully-sealed unit, which means that manually adjusting water and electrolyte levels and the associated risks of spills are virtually eliminated. AGM batteries are used in high-performance applications such as severe duty service vehicles, UPS delivery trucks, and NASCAR race cars. AGM batteries are now commonly found in motorcycles because of their vibration resistance and the reduced likelihood of spilling acid during cornering. The lighter, compact construction also allows for these batteries to be mounted at odd angles to suit the motorcycle’s particular frame and chassis design. AGM batteries, however, do have a higher cost than regular lead acid batteries, but the advantages of AGM technology far outweigh the disadvantages.
